Prof Ernst-Detlef Schulze, one of the founding directors of the institute, retired in September 2009. As Scientific Member of The Max Planck Society, however, the former head of the department Biogeochemical Processes successfully continues his research activities. His scientific focus is on ecosystem processes, biodiversity, and land management with an emphasis on forests. As a testimony, he was awarded major awards, to wit: a) Bavarian State Medal in Silver; b) Max Planck Science Award; c) Bullard Prize of Harward University; d) “Highly Cited Researcher (ISI)”; and e) Honorary Professor of the Siberian Federal University.
